Ah, since the Fourth of July I've lost my internet connection at Perch HQ in Berkeley. Sporadic updates until things get ironed out.

Progcal, I hope you get through your situation, and I hope you choose to eventually come back to blogging.

Thanks to Rory for the inspiration. (Also, he correctly identified the quote from Zork, the only text adventure with real grues.)

While we're linking to The Funny, check out Something Positive. Tuesday's comic is extraordinarily funny and eerily Berkeley-appropriate. If you can name the old school videogame quoted in the post on July 1 at Something Positive, you'll get a mention and a shiny link to your website! (First correct answer only. Must be registered member or reader of Albatross Perch to qualify. Winner may not be related to Andrew Podolsky with the exception of Elanor. No purchase necessary.)

Why is our money going to the Farm Security Act? And what the hell is "mohair"? Dave Barry explains.

Online polls amuse me to no end. Whether you're dying to know how the world feels about Spielberg directing Star Wars movies (over 6,000 fans say yes!), what America's favorite Cheh Chang Hong Kong movie made between 1966-1976 is (a bold 14.6% majority say "The Fantastic Magic Baby"), or whether a Swamp Dragon would best a horde of demons in a fair fight (9,200 cry, "yes!"). Polls are everywhere, and are astounding in the way they take the passing interest (or consumed obsession) of a website lurker and turn his/her idle click into a representation of opinion. With the Internet as widespread and open to people as it has become, the online poll is fast becoming a sign of our times.
So, express yourself, world! And if anyone asks you, "Is it appropriate for Al Gore to criticize President Bush for his handling of the war on terrorism?", rest assured knowing that Cnn.com is way ahead of you in finding out how the public feels. 100,000 people voted in the recent Cnn.com poll, which asks "Is it appropriate for one man to criticize another man"? My feeling is that so much of a potential answer rests on whether you like Bush better than Gore or Gore better than Bush, but that's neither here nor there. A stern 52% majority, fifty three thousand people, believe that Gore is not acting appropriately by criticizing George W. Bush.
